“Paint the Fence; Spirit of Our Rogers Park” was an exciting community-building art project located at the former site of the Heartland Café, an iconic restaurant known as a beacon of music, art, connectivity and political activism for local residents. I decided to devise this art project in order to reinvigorate what the neighborhood space represented to the community for over four decades. With the help of artist, Amy Couey, over 75 Rogers Park and neighboring residents came together in the celebration of the community by painting in the outline on the wooden fence. As the title suggested, the event, not just the mural its-self, was truly a testament to the spirit of our Rogers Park.
